reels of solid steel.

Cheeba's put up his entire AV set on the Solid Steel page, which i had the pleasure of seeing live a few months back and is definitely worth a watch. Ridiculously fun from start to finish, even Prince Charles can't help but hit us with some of his best moves.

you're fucking out. DELS fucking in.

Photobucket

DELS is a London hip hop mc and self-confessed comic nerd who i'm pretty excited about. With production from the likes of Micachu, Joe Hot Chip and Eli-T, coupled with a flow reminiscent of the early 90s heyday of hip hop, he seems to be a cut above the rest of the UK's otherwise hit and miss hip hop offerings. His eclectic range of influences, including Pharcyde's drop video, pirate radio, David Lynch and Where The Wild Things Are come through in his genre-defying sound.
Apparently not content with groundbreaking crossover collaborations, he's determined to push the boundaries in other areas, and his live show is renowned for being that little bit more innovative. Speaking with RWD earlier this month he said:

"I want to inject this whole visual element onstage; I want DELS to be as much about visual as it is audio. I used to dilute my music all the time, but then I thought ‘Fuck it, I’m just going to do what’s in my head', Thankfully people seem to like it."

Look out for his upcoming release Shapeshift, featured on Kwesachu Mixtape Vol. 1, alongside Golden Silvers, The XX & Ghost Poet, which you can listen to here.

DELS also currently contributes to A Tribe Called Next, a blog definitely worth taking a look at.

short attention span

Short Attention Span is a free lo-fi compilation put out by Methodist Leisure Inc, an organisation run almost entirely by one 19 yr old in his loughborough bedroom. The half hour, 48 track collection sounds something like the mind of a schizophrenic dropout who's just taken a fuckload of speed and stayed in watching low budget horror films i.e. REALLY FUCKING FUN.
Featuring a wide array of underground lo-fi artists such as Japanther, The Death Set, Vivian Girls, PENS, and Best Fwends, as well as many lesser known acts, this is possibly the definitive megamix of noise and 'spaz-anthems'.
Download it for free tomorrow (28th sept, world rabies day) from Methodist Leisure Inc.

wanna make sweet love in the moonlight.

the video you are about to see is difficult to explain with only the words available to me. most people i showed it to were so completely baffled that they found it difficult to laugh, breathe, or do anything but stare in disbelief. sometimes its so ridiculous its hard to believe its for real and not a pisstake.
the hunk you see in the video is some scene kid who was in the year below us in college. he's really short and to the best of my knowledge he can't play the guitar. to the best of my knowledge guitars don't make jaunty synth riffs either.
look out for the bit where he spins around with his arms out. you couldn't make this shit up.

dfd has love for new york.

i love new york may seem like just another ridiculous, trashy mtv reality tv endeavour, but i don't think i can stress just how entertaining it is. the show focuses on tiffany 'new york' pollard, who appeared on the equally ludicrous flavor of love and achieved fame through being, in her own words the 'Head Bitch In Charge' (or HBIC for short), clashing with pretty much every contestant on the show before getting eliminated in the final. but apparently the world hadn't seen enough of new york yet, and she was invited back halfway through the second series to help mr flav eliminate contestants, eventually becoming an actual contestant again and being knocked out in the final. again.
the basic premise of i love new york is pretty similar to flavor of love: a bunch of fame-greedy morons competing (and more often than not fighting) to win the 'love' of a c-list celebrity. i mean flavor flav is pretty sick, just look at that clock necklace, but surely he has girls throwing themselves at him anyway, and putting them in front of a camera will only make them more desperate and fake.
the men of i love new york are quite a diverse bunch, ranging from the vertically challenged gangsta 'midget mac', to quiet clearly mentally handicapped 'it', to absolute dweeeebs like 'cheezy'. 'tailor made' seems to be so in love with new york he will screw over every contestant in the house in the sneakiest way possible whilst keeping his psychotic stalker gaze locked on the woman of his dreams. it seems hard to believe that any of these men genuinely do 'have love for new york', as i can't find one attractive feature about her. she's just a complete and utter bint. but this just makes the desperate and embarrassing attempts of her suitors all the more entertaining.
its shows like this that make me wonder how low mtv will go. they've managed to make 2 seasons out of a spinoff of an already ridiculous reality tv show, in which all the contestants are broadcasting to the world their attempts in chasing after that which most normal people regard as one of the most important and personal things in life i.e. love. surely these relationships have no hope of a normal or healthy outcome?
the second season of i love new york (apparently things didn't work out with the winner of the first season. shocking) has just been showing on mtv one at at about 2am every night. i'm not sure if its still on or if the season's over, but i'm sure you can find it on the internet somewhere/wait for the inevitable repeats. those hungry for more i♥ny related madness will be glad to hear that you can now tune in to see 'new york' try (and supposedly fail hilariously) to become an actress in new york goes to hollywood, see her try her hand at being an actual human being and get a job in new york goes to work, and witness two of i♥ny biggest imbeciles run for city council in tailor made & it run the city. also in a recent poll tiffany held (this woman literally lives in a reality tv show), the public voted for yet another season of i♥ny. fingers crossed!

Smoker in 'castaway' bid to quit

A former banker is marooning himself on a remote uninhabited island in a radical attempt to stop smoking, it has emerged.

Geoff Spice will spend August as a castaway on Sgarabhaigh in the Outer Hebrides, far from the temptation of cigarettes.

He will have to camp during his stay as the island has only three ruined 'bothies' - huts once used by shepherds - and no electricity or running water.

Mr Spice, who used to be a senior banker at NM Rothschild in London, hopes the solitude will help him give up his 30-a-day habit.

He told newspapers: "This is my last chance. I've been smoking 30-a-day as usual but I think I can crack the habit.

"I also hope that living on the island and surviving by myself will mean that I will not pile on the pounds as other people do when they give up."

Mr Spice, who lives in Surrey, reportedly began smoking 43 years ago as a paperboy.

The island of Sgarabhaigh is owned by Dave Hill who also runs its website.

A statement on the website reads: "August 2009 will see us install our most recent Castaway on Sgarabhaigh who is going to use the solitude and distance from tobacco to cure himself of his smoking habit.

"His name is Geoff and he will be taking residence for the whole of August along with his stock of 120 books."

what's big, pink and hard?

a pig with a flick-knife wheyyyyyyyyy.

i've never really got into the whole shoegaze thing, its not that i don't like what i've heard i've just never really set time aside to get into it. recent bands like the raveonettes and glasvegas have attempted to emulate the shoegaze sound with varying degrees of success, but none of these have managed to grab my attention and adulation quite like the big pink have.

the big pink are a duo from london who blend spellbinding white noise and reverb with epic electronic beats and lyrics about breaking hearts. they've already toured with tv on the radio and they're starting to get all the right kind of attention from blogs and the media alike.

you can download their upcoming single dominos from their website for free, which you should definitely do because its fucking fantastic and the chorus will be cemented in your brain for a good few days. also velvet, which featured on the mixtape i posted this week, is a must-listen. here's a few for you to download:

back to life, back to reality.

i touched down back on english soil yesterday afternoon after benicassim, possibly the best holiday of all my nineteen years (sorry jake). physically exhausting and financially devastating it may have been, but even hurricanes and bush fires didn't manage to dampen our spirits as we were treated to some of the best live performances i've seen to date.
oasis were predictably epic. really tough call between their set of swaggering singalong bangers and blur's glasto performance. 2manydjs played a pretty much identical set to their glasto one, except this time it was on benicassim's main stage, so that was pretty insane. lykke li was my surprise favourite of the week though, if only for the moment she broke into can i kick it by a tribe called quest, one of my favourite hip hop tracks of all time. i went fucking sick.
other highlights included aeroplane, birdy nam nam, naive new beaters and no reply.
returning to preston life is a pretty daunting prospect after 2 weeks of unbridled fun and sun, but helping ease me back to normality will be the bear around your neck, a two-piece folk outfit from garstang, near preston. anyone in the area tonight should get down to bitter suite in preston to witness their hypnotic blend of acoustic twiddles and enchanting, harmonic vocals. i love how their songs all have a really natural feel to them, and they make me want to take up residence in my treehouse.
their new ep no eyed deer is streaming over on the sticks and stones blog. also check out their myspace for more material.

left my wallet in estacio sants.

yesterday we arrived at barcelona's estacio sants train station, exhausted after about 394723974 of being awake and travelling thousands of miles, ready to collapse in the 2 star luxury of albergue studio youth hostel. however, LITERALLY 5 MINS after we set foot off the coach, i found that my wallet had mysteriously disappeared out of my rucksack pocket. which means that all my euros, my bank card, blackwell's member card (i had loads of points too!), n.u.s, jimmy hat, and i.d are now no longer in my possession and some lucky spaniard is blowing 200 euros on sangria and heroin. it didn't help that the spanish police force are possibly the least competent and least helpful people in the actual world.

i didn't think i'd be able to relate to q-tip again after his showcase of new, really quite shocking material at glastonbury. now i can totally relate to his plight in el segundo. anyway, microwave lasagne and 27 cent beer calls, laters!

highbrow inanity part one.

sometimes, i wish i was this cool. courtesy of latfh

pretension is shit. a lot of the time really good things get ruined because too many smug twats like to parade around declaring how much they love that bit in that film more than you but its not as good as the book which they've read 27 times. to hit back at this i've decided to start a feature where basically i make inane comments about high culture.

VIVRE SA VIE

french fittie gets pimped out, talks about philosophical shit with some old geezer, then gets shot for trying to break out of da game. anna karina is well fit and i'd definitely pay to have sex with her.

NAKED LUNCH

"you got a problem with my buddy? i'll castrate the shit out of you"

guy takes a fuckload of smack and writes about all the crazy shit he sees. i mean he seriously goes crackers.

extract (verbatim):
'Arab rioters yip and howl, castrating, disemboweling, throw burning gasoline ... Dancing boys striptease with intestines, women stick severed genitals in their cunts, grind, bump and flick it at the man of their choice ... Religious fanatics harangue the crowd from helicopters and rain stone tablets on their heads, inscribed with meaningless messages ... Leopard Men tear people to pieces with iron claws, coughing and grunting ... Kwakiutl Cannibal Society initiates bite off noses and ears ... A Coprophage calls for a plate, shits on it and eats the shit, exclaiming "Mmmm, that's my rich substance"'

oooo mr burroughs tell me a bedtime story.

the dopest ghost in town.

so this week the north west has decided to fuck with our heads and go all tropical. i open my blinds in the morning to blissful sunshine ready to hit the park and by the time i'm having breakfast there'll be an ACTUAL THUNDERSTORM. this never happens around here. extremes of weather are not usually something you'll find in the north west (votes for
extreme right-wing parties however...)
anyway this means i've not bothered braving the confusing, nasty outdoors, and instead found solace in the crumb-laden sheets of my ridiculously comfy bed and our best friend the internet. i thought i'd share my highlights of the past few days with you.

KIDS

this film is so fucking cool. ok its mostly about aids and nasty shit but it got me right in the mood for summer. now i just want to live in new york and chill with my homies on the park with blunts in rotation and skateboard all day. if someone could sort that out for me that would be excellent.

PLATFORM

ive spent a lot of time on this site the past couple of days. its basically like vice magazine except not as, ermmm, cunty (is that a word? it should be). still a few shit pretentious articles but the majority are genuinely funny and well written. here's a few personal favourites:

90s Kids Shows Were Scary

Staying In On The Internet

Things To Do Before You're 21

TOTALLY BONE

http://totallybone.blogspot.com/

a blog written by a friend of a friend and his girlfriend. loads of hilarious and intelligent articles and plenty of hatin' on american apparel, which can never be a bad thing.

FLIP STUFF OFF

http://flipstuffoff.wordpress.com/

pretty self-explanatory really. simple but really makes me laugh!

LITERAL ALBUM COVERS

continuing the trend of simple silly things. pretty bloody funny though.

HOLLA DADDY

winding people up on dating sites. i particularly recommend the first one (with victor). me and my mate jake did this once but went nowhere near the lengths this guy goes to. there really are some freeeeaks in the world. bit mean but fucking hilarious.

JAH RASTAFARI

this guy is classic. i don't think anybody has ever been quite as happy as him ever. a role model for us all.

PETER SERAFINOWICZ

again not much to say on this. just a few funny bits and pieces by mostly british comedians. check out his and matt berry's twitterband project. clever shit!

there's more but i'm getting bored. all i'll say is LISTEN TO GOLDEN SILVERS THEY WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

diggin' for dirt glastonbury awards 2009.

this tuesday i returned to sanity and hygiene from the mud, music and madness of glastonbury festival. needless to say it was fucking amazing. there were far too many highlights to choose from so instead of just listing who i saw i've decided to give awards based on categories. i have too much time on my hands.

BEST NEWCOMER: GOLDEN SILVERS

i was completely blown away by this north london trio, who write beautiful harmonic love songs full of mythology and synths. if you haven't heard them yet i strongly suggest you download their album true romance. literally the best album ive heard this year. im excited about what else golden silvers have up their dapper sleeves and you should be too. here's their new single arrows of eros and a link to their album as a special treat. christ i love this band.

golden silvers - true romance

BEST DANCE ACT: 2MANYDJS

i've seen 2manydjs a couple of times before, but the belgian boys of soulwax fame always manage to really make a crowd go insane. their performance in glasto's east dance tent was the best i've ever seen them, maybe due to the mind-boggling av set they had projected on an enormous screen looming over them. the finale (a blur of nirvana and confetti explosions) was bloody mental. more exercise than ive had in a long time. hopefully they can match this performance in a couple of weeks when im basking in the spanish sun of benicassim. cannot wait.

BEST ALTERNATIVE ACT: JAMIE T

jamie's another artist i've followed for a long time. his songs sound like what being young feels like and he's a pro at making messy summer bedroom bangers. he played a fair bit of new material at glasto and i'm psychhhhed for his new album which should be out in the next couple of months. for now though here's his new sticks and stones ep and the video for the title track. makes me really wanna go out with my mates and cause mischief.

BEST HEADLINER: BLUR

seeing any headlining act on glastonbury's pyramid stage is always epic and blur were no exception. even damon albarn was overwhelmed by it all and broke down in tears during in the end. i've never been a die-hard blur fan like a couple of the mates i was with, but singing along to britpop with hundreds of thousands of people is always fantastic.  a fantastic end to a fantastic week.

sounds of summer.

the boys over at palms out sounds blog have been putting out jaunty sun-soaked mixes by big names for a couple of months now as part of their sounds of summer series. here's a few of my favourites so far.

and in a similar vein here's one i rustled up this afternoon:

you've got to show me love.

Funuke: Show Some Love, You Losers! is a japanese dark comedy with everything from knife-fights to incestuous love triangles. It centers around a dysfunctional family reunited by the death of their parents, who were hit by a truck during a panic to save a cat. it sort of reminded me of The Royal Tenenbaums, with the siblings being thrown together despite their huge grievances, which become apparent as the film progresses:
The charm of the quiet small town is completely lost on failed actress and part-time prossie Sumika; Kyomi is reserved and observant, expressing her anger and family secrets through gruesome manga cartoons; Machiko and Shinji maintain a loveless marriage, made worse by Shinji's alcoholism and money problems.
As the plot progresses in ever-varying directions, you find yourself becoming completely engrossed in this family's unhappy existence, and its worth watching if only for the crazy manga-themed climax.

DAMN fine cup of coffee.

i posted about kormac's bodytonic podcast yesterday, and this morning thought i'd give dj yoda's a listen. i've always been a fan of yoda but he really killed it on this one. for the 5 minute twin peaks section alone its up there on my BEST THINGS EVER list.

get it HERE

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

kor-blimey!

listened to kormac's latest mix on the bodytonic podcast series this morning and its bloody fantastic. all his mashups are spot on. i remember when i saw him live a couple of months back with a-skillz he played a mix of weezer's island in the sun with vanilla ice's ice ice baby. genius? i'd say so.

get the podcast HERE

this track featured on it and made me get all john travolta when i was making my sandwich. it turned out to be a really tasty sandwich so if you want to step up your culinary skillz i'd give this a listen.

instinctive travels and paths of rhythm #3

this year marks the 10th anniversary of big l's death, and to mark this dj soul has treated us to a mix of his finest moments. find the mp3 and tracklisting on the mad decent blog here.

i thought i'd heard pretty much everything big l had put out when i developed a borderline-unhealthy obsession with him a couple of months back. but near the end of the tape this freestyle came in and blew me away. apparently it came about by chance when L and jay-z happened to be in the studio together one night. the instrumental gives me goosebumps!

like a heatwave.

our long lost friend the sun has decided to flaunt its shiny face at us again the past couple of days, and what better way to celebrate the bitchin' heat than flopping out some manic dancehall mashups!
i saw the heatwave accidentally at fabric a couple of years back, and they seemed to be having as much fun as their audience, jumping around behind the decks and taking turns to throw vinyl on and off the turntables like it was going out of fashion. a collective of djs hailing from london and bristol, the heatwave have been blowing up summer parties for years.

anyway, here's a few mashups they've come to be famous for:

and for those long days spent sprawled out under the sun, here's a couple of ridiculously fun mixes:

school's out!

thursday meant the end of sparknotes cramming hell and the start of what's set to be a fantasssstic summer. i was lucky enough to have my celebratory night soundtracked by a collection of amazing bands at liverpool sound city festival's american showcase night. here's the highlights!

BLACK LIPS

i'd wanted to see black lips for a very long time and finally got the opportunity here. they did NOT disappoint as they charged through a raucous and overwhelmingly fun set, with stagedives and full-mouth gold grills thrown in for good measure. i would advise everyone to go see them if they get a chance. here's a video of the live show that got them thrown out of india, and their new album to download and BUY if you like what you hear.

CRYSTAL ANTLERS

this is a band i'd heard good things about but never actually given a proper listen. their live show blew me away, and i had their epic stoner-rock anthem 'a thousand eyes' in my head for a good 24 hours. see if it sticks with you.

TITUS ANDRONICUS

between the dazed ramblings of the quite clearly stoned and hairy guitarist, these boys blasted out epic (i use that word too much), shambolic shouty guitar rock. i couldn't help sing along the shameless theme tune to the epicepicepic second half of their fear and loathing in mahwah, nj.
the fact that they come from new jersey was a bonus for me too, as right now it seems i cream myself at anything remotely sopranos related.
here's fear and loathing in mahwah, nj. scattaaaaaaa!
